Description

Disaster triage is employed when local resources are unable to provide immediate care on a timely basis to all victims needing such care. This changes the healthcare provider’s goal from providing high-intensity care to the sickest victims to doing the greatest good for the greatest number. This focal shift is guided by a popular triage system called Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START). Since the decisions made in this phase of disaster medicine have a significant impact on patients and their communities, simplicity and utilization in the field are prioritized.

My redesign of the START algorithm emphasis speed, simplicity, and utilization in the field. The flow diagram uses sparse color to emphasize outcomes. The text is readable even on mobile devices. Critical measurements (like Breathing Rate) were changed from mathematical symbols (greater than and less than signs) to up and down arrows. ‘Yes/No’ actions were reduced to simple check marks and ‘X’s, and value coded consistently.

After reviewing reference materials, I used CanadiEM’s brillantly simple redesign and reworked the graphic design.

Both are considered valid ways of learning the information. The flow diagram is useful for presentations, textbooks, and for medical students and residents to study and learn the algorithm for the first time. The smaller pocket-sized guide could be used in the field for healthcare providers familiar with the algorithm, quick refreshes, and rapid dissemination through mobile/small devices.
